Tip of the pro

Hips or shoulders?

Powerful players manage to differentiate the rotation of the shoulders and the rotation of the hips.
While the shoulders turn considerably at the time of the backswing, the turn of the hips must be minimal.

It’s when the club is on the downswing that the hips come into play, not during the backswing. The action of the hips is intimately linked to the movement of the knees. When the knee sinks or bends inward, the hips turn too much, which makes a proper downswing impossible.

To improve your swing, make sure your left knee (for right-handers) is very stable throughout the swing, particularly during the backswing. That way, you’ll keep the distance between your knees and ensure your rotations are synchronized.
